Hurley Lame

Mr. Hurley Lame, 99, one of Louisiana’s oldest residents, went home to his Lord and Savior on September 1, 2009. He passed away of Age-related complications at Pike County Memorial Hospital in Louisiana, surrounded by his son, daughter-in-law, and his best friends Florence and Russell Hobkirk. Hurley Guy Lame was born in Louisiana on July 19, 1910, the middle child of 7 children of Charles Raymond and Martha Frances Doyle Lame. He was a grandson of Jeptha Lame, who died young of wounds received in the civil war, and his wife Minerva Miner Lame, and of James Music and Martha Susan Jackson Doyle. Hurley married his soul-mate Anna Elizabeth Travis on March 16, 1935 in St. Louis, Missouri. They were married more than 72 years before she passed away in November 2007. They were blessed with one child, Kenneth Dale Lame, Three grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. Hurley was kind and decent, an honorable and gentle man in every sense. He worshipped his Lord every day, he loved and provided for his family, and he adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Few things in life gave him more joy than small children. He devoted much of his time to reading and studying his Bible, and actually wore out several. He came of age during the Great Depression, which greatly shaped his life. He lived frugally and was never given to excess. He had an excellent memory, and was a walking encyclopedia of the history of Louisiana during the last century. He retired from Hercules where he was employed for approximately 20 years, and at the time of his death was one of the oldest retired employees. He started his working career at the age of 11 at two local dairy farms. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and their spouses, (Half-brother) Raymond and Edna Lame, Ruby and William Rubemeyer, Roy and Ruth Lame, Ruth and Lloyd Capps, Howard and Edith Lame, Laura Leona and John Buchheit, and Leonard Lame, and most of his many cousins. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Ruth Lame of Salt Lake City, Utah, three grandchildren and their spouses, Kenneth Philip Lame of Westminster, Colorado, Jon Travis and Catherine Gonzales Lame of Sandy, Utah, and Michonne Alice and Charles Hults of Scottsdale, Arizona, and six great-grandchildren, Jamie Lame, Emma Lame, Ethan Lame, Elliott Lame, Sydney Hults, and Gavin Hults. He is also survived by two cousins, Marie Baxter Neir and Darlene Baxter Heitz, both of Charles City, Iowa, and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Tuesday evening, September 8th, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Collier Funeral Home in Louisiana, Missouri. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 9th at the funeral home. The Rev. Alfred Daves will officiate. Interment will be at the Riverview Cemetery in Louisiana. Pallbearers will be K. Philip Lame, Jon Travis Lame, Charles Hults, Charles Lame, Kent Travis, and Alan Akers. The family would like to thank the staff of Lynn’s Heritage House, the staff of Pike County Memorial Hospital, Barbara Crow, Patty Ringhausen, Ron and Judy Allele, and the many friends and relatives who visited and called Hurley, sometimes taking him out for rides and snacks. They were and are all appreciated so much. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Elizabeth Travis Lame Memorial Nursing Scholarship c/o Mercantile Bank in Louisiana, of a charity of your choice. In his memory, please be kind to your children, and visit someone in a care facility.
