Bette Jane Maxwell, 79, of Louisiana, MO, passed away on Monday, August 2, 2021 at her sister’s home surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday August 7, 2021 at the First Presbyterian Church in Louisiana, MO. The Rev. Priscilla Dowden-White will officiate. Burial will be at the Riverview Cemetery in Louisiana, MO. Visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. until time of service Saturday at the church. Bette was born on May 25, 1942 in Jefferson City, MO. She was married to Edward Maxwell and he preceded her in death on August 30, 1977. Bette was a graduate of Louisiana High School. She had worked many years planning Lincoln High School reunions, the school she had attended before they integrated with Louisiana High School. She served on various committees in Pike and Marion counties including NECAC, the Ministerial Alliance, and City Boards. She worked many years at Head Start serving as its Social Services Director. She was a faithful member of the Bethel AME Church for many years. She loved reading, working crosswords, word searches, traveling, and playing solitaire. She enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren and being with her family, as well as helping others any way she could. She is survived by her children, Kim Salmons of Columbia, MO, Lynette Maxwell of Louisiana, MO, Tamara Hutt (Clarence) of Marietta, GA, Michael Maxwell (Lajane) of St. Louis, MO, and Michele Maxwell Bates of Dallas, TX, her step-children, Lorraine Ingram, Shirley Woolfolk, Maude Pelloquin, and Brenda Johnson, her sister, Joyce Bell of Louisiana, MO, brother, Norman Smith of Wentzville, MO, her aunt, Freida Johnson of Crockett, TX, bonus daughters, Tracy Miller of Columbia, MO and Ivy Wilson of St. Peters, MO, and bonus son, Carlos Lee of Columbia, MO, 8 grandchildren, Tyrone Maxwell, Jasmyn Maxwell, James Maxwell, Jordan Maxwell, Anthony Maxwell, Jerrod Hobbs, Asha Maxwell, Ray Maxwell, and Skye Maxwell, 6 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eleanor Smith Shepherd and Norman Smith, a son, Eric Maxwell, a brother Edward Smith, a brother in-law, a sister in-law, a step-daughter, a step-son, and her faithful loving partner, Delbert Parsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Ovalta Bell, Lamont Smith, Tyrone Maxwell, James Maxwell, Jordan Maxwell, Anthony Maxwell, and Jerrod Hobbs. Active pallbearers will be Junior Moore, Tyrone Hobbs, Kenny Pearl, Carlos Lee, Justin Thomas, and Frank McQuay. The family would like to thank Community Loving Care Hospice, especially nurse Dana, for all their care and assistance. Memorials may be made to Community Loving Care Hospice in care of the funeral home. The family requests that those attending the visitation and funeral service that masks be worn.
