Carol Calvin

Heaven welcomed a special angel as Carol L. Houchins Calvin, 87, passed away from this earth on Tuesday, September 20, 2022. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 25, 2022 at the Collier Funeral Home in Louisiana, MO. Ruth Shoemaker will officiate. Burial will be at the Fairview Cemetery near Louisiana. Visitation will be held from 12:00 P.M. until time of service Sunday at the funeral home. Carol was born on December 9, 1934 in Louisiana, MO to Arnold E. and Clara B. Wilson Houchins. She was raised on the family farm and attended Louisiana schools and graduated in 1953. Later that year she was united in marriage to Richard E. Calvin on December 5, 1953. After 2 children were born, enrolled in Mexico, MO Public Nursing School and graduated with a Licensed Practical Nurse degree in 1961. Many years later she attended St. Mary’s School of Nursing in O’Fallon, MO and graduated in 1980 with an Associate Arts degree as a Registered Nurse. She devoted 44 years in this career caring for others with kindness and compassion in several places – Louisiana Nursing Home, Maple Grove Lodge, Pike County Memorial Hospital, Smith-Barr Manor, Country View Nursing Home, Tri-County Care Center, and Pike County Home Care and Hospice until her retirement. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 3 siblings, Eileen Akers, Russell Houchins, and Evelyn Townsell, 6 brothers in-law, and 4 sisters in-law. She is survived by her children, Renae (Calvin) Johnson, and Dean Calvin (Debbie Kuenzle), her grandchildren, Shane Lafferty, Amy (Johnson) Poyser, Richie Calvin, and Jeff Calvin (Jennifer), great grandchildren, Bailey Lafferty, Lucas Lafferty, Delaney Poyser, Andrew Poyser, Brody Poyser, Rebecca Calvin, J.D. Calvin, and Jillian Calvin, and great great grandchildren, Brently Lafferty and baby brother due in October. Also surviving are 3 brothers in-law, 4 sisters in-law, and many nieces, nephews, and friends. She enjoyed her hobbies of sewing, knitting, crocheting, reading, puzzle books, and a special love for dancing. Most of all she loved spending time with her family. Honorary pallbearers will be Bailey Lafferty, Rebecca Calvin, Delaney Poyser, Jillian Calvin, and Brently Lafferty. Active pallbearers will be Shane Lafferty, Richie Calvin, Jeff Calvin, Andrew Poyser, Lucas Lafferty, JD Calvin, and Brody Poyser. Memorials may be made to the Pike County Home Care and Hospice.
